school holidays here.....

Well the school holidays have been here for less than a week and I am going to tear my hair out already...lol

The weather is still terrible (although the sun did shine on us yesterday). There is still flooding less than an hours drive away from where we live. Thank goodness we don't live near any rivers here, my sympathies go out to everyone who has lost their homes and personal possessions over the last few weeks. The skies are dark grey again today.

I have got the workmen coming at 7.30am tomorrow morning to fit a new central heating boiler and gas fire. Personally, I'd prefer the lie-in, but that ain't gonna happen again until some time next week....lol....I know it's gonna be a nightmare with them here and trying to live life normally, like eating, going the loo etc, etc, with the 3 kids around. Oh, well. Hopefully, this time next week it will be all done and we will be running more cost effectively!!!

I have posted off my application for a Sun Holiday today. we are hoping to go away again in October for 4 nights, like we did last year. We went to Scotland and had a great time. The photo is off us on the beach that was next to the holiday park. This time we are hoping to go to Devon or Cornwall. Fingers crossed and I'll keep you all posted.
I've got a few errands to run now and some of the usual housework kinda stuff to do, so I'll see ya all later.

RAIN, RAIN GO AWAY....

The rain will not stop....where is it all coming from????

This heatwave of a summer is turning into a nightmare. It is now the middle of July and we can not hang washing out to dry...what's going on there then..lol

Enough of my moaning..3 more days of school left before they break up for the 6 weeks holiday. My daughter (Lauren) will be going off to college to do Btec National Diploma in Peformance Dance and also an 'A' Level in Performance Studies.

My middle child (Lee) will be changing High School in September as the one he is at now will be closing at the end of August 2008 (we fought hard, but, unfortunately, no-one listened). He is going to a High School that I didn't want him to attend in the first place, but it is now the nearest when his school closes - typical....

My youngest (Robson) will be going into Year 4 and loves his new teacher better than the one he has now...so hopefully all will go well in September. New challenges for all - a new routine to get into..can't wait...

Lauren is trying to find a part-time job at the moment. She wants anytime until Septembe, then week-end work when she is at college. She is fed up of not having any money - join the club I say....lol...

I DIDN'T KNOW THAT

I Didn't Know That..

-Q: Why are many coin banks shaped like pigs?

A: Long ago, dishes and cookware in Europe were made of a dense orange clay called "pygg". When people saved coins in jars made of this clay, the jars became known as "pygg banks." When an English potter misunderstood the word, he made a bank that resembled a pig. And it caught on.

Q: Did you ever wonder why dimes, quarters and half dollars have notches, while pennies and nickels do not?

A: The US Mint began putting notches on the edges of coins containing gold and silver to discourage holders from shaving off small quantities of the precious metals Dimes, quarters and half dollars are notched because they used to contain silver. Pennies and nickels aren't notched becaus e the metals they contain are not valuable enough to shave..

Q: Why do men's clothes have buttons on the right while women's clothes have buttons on the left?

A: When buttons were invented, they were very expensive and worn primarily by the rich. Because wealthy women were dressed by maids, dressmakers put the buttons on the maid's right. Since most people are right-handed, it is easier to push buttons on the right through holes on the left. And that's where women's buttons have remained since.

Q: Why do X's at the end of a letter signify kisses?

A: In the Middle Ages, when many people were unable to read or write, documents were often signed using an X. Kissing the X represented an oath to fulfill obligations specified in the document. The X and the kiss eventually became synonymou s.

Q: Why is shifting responsibility to someone else called "passing the buck"?

A: In card games, it was once customary to pass an item, called a buck, from player to player to indicate whose turn it was to deal. If a player did not wish to assume the responsibility, he would "pass the buck" to the next player.

Q: Why do people clink their glasses before drinking a toast?

A: It used to be common for someone to try to kill an enemy by offering him a poisoned drink. To prove to a guest that a drink was safe, it became customary for a guest to pour a small amount of his drink into the glass of the host. Both men would drink it simultaneously. When a guest trusted his host, he would then just touch or clink the host's glass with his own.

Q: Why are people in the public eye said to be "in the limelight"?

A: Invented in 1825, limelight was used in lighthouses and stage lighting by burning a cylinder of lime which produced a brilliant light. In the theatre, performers on stage "in the limelight" were seen by the audience to be the center of attention.

Q: Why do ships and aircraft in trouble use "mayday"as their call for help?

A: This comes from the French word m'aidez -meaning "help me" -- and is pronounced "mayday,"

Q: Why is someone who is feeling great "on cloud nine"?

A: Types of clouds are numbered according to the altitudes they attain, with nine being the highest cloud If someone is said to be on cloud nine, that person is floating well above worldly cares..

Q: Why are zero scores in tennis called "love"?

A: In France , where tennis first became popular, a big, round zero on scoreboard looked like an egg and was called "l'oeuf," which is French for "egg." When tennis was introduced in the US, Americans pronounced it "love."

Q: In golf, where did the term "Caddie" come from?

A. When Mary, later Queen of Scots, went to France as a young girl (for education & survival), Louis, King of France, learned that she loved the Scot game "golf." So he had the first golf course outside of Scotland built for her enjoyment. To make sure she was properly chaperoned (and guarded) while she played, Louis hired cadets from a military school to accompany her. Mary liked this a lot and when she returned to Scotland (not a very good idea in the long run), she took the practice with her. I n French, the word cadet is pronounced 'ca-day' and the Scots changed it into "caddie." So now YOU know!

LAST COUPLE OF DAYS....

Lee's birthday went very well on Tuesday. He loved the Wii console we got him. Played tennis on there with him alot on Tuesday and it gives you a good work out as well....lol

Had a meeting at school on Tuesday morning (I'm a midday supervisor) - to see what is going on and if we have any problems. Yeah - get rid of the really, really, naughty kids and the school would be heaven....There doesn't seem to be any disipline these days. The kids know that they can do anything and there are no consequences. They just get spoken to in a soft voice and told not to do it again, then off they go. Next day, they do it again and so the cycle goes. Banging heads against brick walls is a phrase that frequently pops into my head!!!!!

Yesterday morning (on the flip side of what kids can do) - I went to the finals of the QB Factor, which is based on the X Factor from TV. There were 16 finalists ranging from reception class (4/5 year-old) up to Year 6 (10/11 year olds). They were all fantastic. The two girls who won (both Year 5, aged 10) were great. The one was super confident and really knew what she was doing. Fab couple of hours spent watching children being children and having fun.....

Can't stop being tired at the moment. Think it's because it is nearing the end of term and everyone is a little fed up and worn out...Roll on next Thursday when we break up and Friday I can try and have a little lie-in (well about an extra half an hour..lol)

Hope you are all well and I will try and post again soon.

ANOTHER WEEK

I hope you all had a lovely weekend. The sun has been shining this morning, but I wonder how long that will last.

It's Lee's birthday tomorrow and he wanted a Nintendo Wii. As we have just paid for Lauren's Prom and her 16th birthday, money is a little tight to say the least. Anyways - a friend of ours that my hubby works with said his partners son has one that has only been used a couple of times and has 2 controllers, Wii Sports, Wii Play and another thingy (technical aren't I). We are getting the lot of him for £135 - result!!!

Saturday we bought him some new trainers and a Mario Football game for the Wii and pre-ordered him one of the new Pokemon DS games for the end of July.

Job done....

Mom and dad are coming over in a little while to bring Lee's cards etc, so I think I shall do myself some brekkie and then vacuum up. I got 3 x white/silver postcards to do later for another swap I am in.

Have a nice day - see ya later.

SWAPPING MAD!!!

Gotta lot of swap items to deal with today. I have hoardes of ATC's to make and cute stationery bits to buy....

I love getting the international mail and my local Post Office has begun to question me as to why I send so much mail to the US. I just say I make things then swap them....the look I usually get says everything...lol
The pic above is of 3 ATC's I made last month for a swap titled: 'Button Up'.
I'll post some pics of what I do when I know the recipients have received, so I don't spoil the surprise...
Have fun....
